The Black Phone Movie but there's

It's a horror-thriller that takes the style in a different path than lots of its predecessors. The Black Phone is the directorial debut of Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and co-writer C. Robert Cargill, who reunite with star Ethan Hawke for this adaptation of Joe Hill's quick story. Considering the pedigree of the team involved, you would expect nothing less than bone-chilling terror. Unfortunately, this thriller falls just a bit in need of its objective.

The film is about in the early '70s and the influences of that period are everywhere. Whether it's the desaturated look of the pictures, or the soundtrack that calls to thoughts the music of John Wayne Gacy and the child assassin from It, the filmmakers are keen on paying homage to a few of horror's most memorable moments. This isn't any unhealthy factor, nevertheless it does make The Black Phone feel slightly recycled at times.
